Just imagine the feeling....
You have just experienced the biggest letdown of your life, because the man you have known, loved and followed as a mentor for the past three years, has just been arrested, beaten, publicly tortured and finally executed in the most humilating fashion possible in the city streets.
You've spent the past two days in hiding for fear that the government might come after you next, because everybody knows you were one of "his followers." You only have the cold isolation of your hiding place to keep you company in your sorrow. All you have been able to do is pray and feel your life ripped apart in silent anguish, for fear of alerting anyone of your secret refuge.
Then the Word comes....his body has been discovered missing from his place of initial burial. One of your friends, and fellow followers of this man, has even reported that he is alive and walking again among the living! You struggle with mixed feeling of joy and disbelief about this, 'cause after all dead is dead...is it not? I've never seen a dead man walking...except of course for that fellow you met months back. What was his name? Lazarus...yes Lazarus... and he was apparently raised from death by your mentor, though some of us had our doubts!
Then it happens...after you and your friends have mustered enough courage to come out of hiding to meet, (even though it is in a secret location...so as not to attract attention), he's there! Seeing him in the flesh, you suddenly think of every person who you've lost to death and the dreams you've had about just being able to see and speak with them, one last time. You recall how joyful and peaceful this makes you feel, upon waking up. But now this feeling of Joy and Peace is multiplied 100 times, because this isn't a dream...he's really here in front of you. You have touched him, talked with him, seen the scars from the whipping and stabbing he suffered. You've even see him consuming food in front of you....so this can't just be some kind of spirit that you've heard about 100's of times in tales around the camp-fire.
He starts to tell all of you, about where we will go after death and what it's like...because he's been there, he's seen its glory for himself! Then after a few weeks of his presence he tells you he is leaving you to join his father in that next place, but he will save a spot for you there and you feel momentarily sad because he will be departing again. But somehow still his presence is with you and within you and you vow to always remember how you felt on this day...the day you discovered that you had met, known and could talk to the living God. And this provides you with peace, joy, strength and security for the rest of your life, in both good times and bad.

Radical Christian Graphic Novel is praised
David Crumm, the highly respected journalist formerly of the Detroit Free Press, who now publishes ReadtheSpirit.com, (which is a wonderful site devoted to discussing all things spiritual from around the world)...had graciously included Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle, in his listing of "10 Books to Watch" in his 11/17/08 edition.
In the article Crumm pays me the ultimate complement...and no, I don't mean his labeling me a "radical Christian" (which I kind of like, BTW)... but by bringing my work into focus through a comparison of Eugene Peterson's "The Message New Testament Bible." Crumm states when attempting to describe Eye Witness, "Think about a marriage between Indiana Jones and Eugene Peterson's dramatically rewritten Message Bible...Fresh, Fun, Faithful and Frantically Pulse-Pounding." Wow...that last part felt like Crumm had channeled a bit of Stan Lee's penchant for the dramatic!
Since I was not that familiar with Mr. Peterson's work before reading this, (and I'm always on the look out for books exploring the original themes, writing style and presentation of the gospels), I dug a bit deeper into Mr. Peterson and this book. It appears Peterson and I share a some common goals for our works, (paraphrasing Peterson) "To bring the New Testament to life for those who haven't read the Bible because it feels to distant or irrelevant to them (in its current form) and to those who read the Bible so much, that it's become "old hat"'. Crumm has indeed hit the nail on the head with this comparison, since that is exactly the foundation behind the Eye Witness graphic novel series...to reach those who may not be reachable otherwise through a presentation they are attracted to, as well as entertained by.
Now that sounds like a book I'm going to have to seek out!

Where are those Christian Comics?
I recently ran across a blog posting dealing with the frustration a college-age Christian reader of graphic novels has over the lack of spiritual and/or Christian based books and comics on the shelves (http://knightword.wordpress.com/2008/10/24/chrisitan-super-heroes/#comment-54). My thoughts are as follows (which if you've met me at a convention...you've probably heard me talk about at length. It's Bob's economics of the comic industry 101):
I share your frustration on this issue, my brother. As someone who has been creating a Christian based graphic novel series since 2002, I've ran across many of what I call "Closet Christian Creators" in the industry, who commend me for taking a stand for Christ in what I am doing. Many also tell me they'd love to do likewise, or have a story they've wanted to create for years, but that there is just not an outlet (I.E. a publisher) for them to bring it to market. In fact one writer (who shall remain nameless) who was the creator of one of our more high-profile and more "demonic characters", is among that group.
You've got to remember that most people working in comics are not like movie or TV directors and/or actors....who make enough through their trade to be financially independent. Most are working stiffs who rely on their monthy assignments to pay their car payments and mortgages... like most of America. And so this doesn't give them the opportunity to take months to years to underwrite creating their spiriutal or Kingdom honoring project. Sorry to say but it's just simple economics. That's why now most of what is being created comes from either very small press publishers, who only publish a title or two a year, or the creators themselves through self-publishing.
Part of my goal through the Eye Witness series, has been to create enough attention and buzz within the comic and book trade to demonstate both to the retailers and publishing community that the paring of spirituality and comics/gn's can work, does have a massive willing audience and will sell if given a quality product. Once that is established and the money is flowing through the system...so to speak, then you'll be amazed at how many books/stories you'll see roll out. But the good news-bads news scenerio will then be...will they be published for the right reasons once the big-boys are involved, that is to say will the spirit which drives many to follow this path, be corrupted by an industry who's bottom line is the bottom line, rather than outreach. Just some food for thought.

Is here a True Christian Leader in the House?
Tell me if this sounds familiar.
I’ve found myself struggling these past couple of years as I’ve continued to develop my faith through reading and re-reading the gospels; studying Jesus and his times; and placing his message in the historical context of life during the Roman occupation, (which is partly an occupational necessity, due to the research needed for my Eye Witness graphic novel series/ http://www.headpress.info/ ).
The struggle develops, because the better understanding I seem to gain of the messages Jesus’ delivered through his words to his apostles, his sermons and his parables (The Good News), the harder time I have reconciling life in the 21st century and how many people who claim to be “Christian” leaders seem project themselves to the world, as the very opposite.
One way to summarize my struggle is to put it in the context of the public-political discourse leading up to next year’s primaries and presidential election. As American voters we obviously want the strongest, best-suited person to lead our country over the next four years. Determining who’s best suited, involves many things, including how we perceive: Their ability to make decisions; how they handle themselves in extreme pressure situations; their ability to deal with people and willingness to compromise without having to sacrifice their principles; their previous job-related histories (re: have they governed another group successfully); their temperament; their character…and the list of traits is potentially endless.
But as people of faith, we (the editorial we) also feel our leaders should embody the qualities that Jesus mentions in the Gospels. In Jesus words, the greatest leader is not the one with the most money, political fundraisers and power-broker allies, but the best servant to his fellow man. Hence, I find myself conflicted when trying to determine whom best fits that bill among the possible candidates. There are those we can write off pretty quickly, while others who always seem to ride the spiritual fence, so to speak…while still others (Like governor Hucklebee), who wear their religious credentials out front and center, (being a former minister who is actively seeking to court the religious conservative voter). But being the president involves a lot of decisions that can/may/do compromise the foundation of what Jesus tells us a leader is, should be.
Currently, I’m reading Brian McLaren’s latest book, “Every Thing Must Change” (http://www.brianmclaren.net/). If you’ve never read McLaren’s earlier work, including the Secret Message of Jesus, he is driven to spark a spiritual revolution in our world, based upon getting back to the roots of the original message of Jesus (through understanding it’s historical context) and how it has been manipulated over the centuries into something that is now bolstering the very same destructive culture Jesus sought to topple 2000 years ago. In this latest work, McLaren talks about what Jesus was referring to, when he mentions the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth (which in McLaren’s view, is a revolutionary concept of a new, better Godly empire than what 1st century Jews were a prisoner of…I.E the Roman empire). Every quality of a man (or leader) Jesus talks about in the Gospels ran counter to the viewpoint of the predominant Roman culture. I mention it here, because it brings to mind many of the same issues we, as 21st century Christians, face today…especially if we find ourselves being called to lead (our business, our church or our city-state or country). Remind yourself what Jesus called us to do (or be)….
1.Don’t get revenge when wronged, but seek reconciliation.
2. Don’t repay violence with violence, but seek creative and transforming non-violent alternatives.
3. Don’t focus on conformity to external moral codes, but rather on internal transformation in love.
4. Don’t love insiders and hate (or fear) outsiders, but welcome them in the context of love for all, justice for all and mutual respect for all.
5. Don’t have anxiety about money, security or pleasure in your life, but trust yourself to the care of God and he will provide for you.
6. Don’t live for wealth, but for a living God who loves all people, including your enemies.
Don’t hate your enemies (or competitors) but love them not based upon what they have done to you, but as you wish they would do for you.
Its pretty daunting list, isn’t it? Take a minute to reread each of those, but think of them within the context of a particular situation our next president could face, (re: terrorist violence, what to do about illegal immigration, dealing with our perceived enemies like Iran, reconciling how the Christian (west) can co-exist with the Islamic (east); the place for homo-sexuals in our society; etc, etc…).
Is there one man (or women) out there among the hopeful that will lead using this kind of solution solving foundation? The sad truth is probably no…because the political expert would say…America can’t afford to operate that way, we’d be perceived as too weak economically and politically, to vulnerable to attack. But you know what? We’ll never know till someone who say’s he’s a “Christian” who wished to lead this country, has the courage to try! Take just a minute to ponder that statement.
The pundits would say, that just announcing such a thing would be political suicide. But would it really? How many people out there would embrace such a revolutionary concept of leadership? Some will say this is pure idealism, fantasy, not realistic in our day and age. Can you imagine how many forces, both internally within our country and externally around the world, would stand in the way of such a leader! There would be virtually no one on his side, except of course….God!
But I would answer that with, this is what Jesus laid out for us. There are over a billion people in this world who still follow his guidance 2000+ years later (it’s still the largest religious following in the world), but yet not one country is truly using his leadership guidelines, (and no, I’m not referring to the rules and regulations laid out by the modern day Vatican), but Jesus original intent. Can you imagine the potential not only for this country, but also for the world if we (being the good ol’ US of A) became a beacon for Jesus’ example in this manner? There literally would be no stopping us, figuratively speaking!
When you read McLaren (and I’m sure there are many other authors and/or theologians that hold this viewpoint) the message is very clear that Jesus came to us to give us the blueprint for the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, not “just” in heaven. He demonstrated for us through his life, his deeds and his words exactly what God originally created us to be, until that is, we were corrupted by original sin. Jesus called upon his disciples to carry this “template” (if you’ll excuse the pun….see my previous comic work for the in-joke) of what it means to be a Godly man to the nations of the world, (including their kings).
Could it be that 2000+ years later, that God is still waiting for the Kingdom of Heaven to evolve (excuse another pun) and begin on Earth?
So as you can see, I for one, am slightly conflicted about the impending election, because hearing that a candidate would repeal Row verse Wade, wishes to discriminate against homosexuals (See #3) and would build a fence around our nation (See #4)…does not tell me if this man (or women) is the kind of servant leader this country really needs to take our country forward in these increasingly difficult and dangerous times. It just tells me he’s pandering to the politico-religious-powerbrokers, using “Christian speak” to get votes.

Eye Witness Author reaches worldwide TV audience
Award-winning author/Illustrator, Robert James Luedke, will be live on The Harvest Show on LeSea Broadcasting on Thursday July 12th from 9-10 EST,(for more information, visit... http://www.harvest-tv.com/).
The Harvest show is broadcast live through 12 stations in the U.S. and is replayed daily at 10pm and 2am EST. In addition, it reaches over 46 million homes via DirectTV channel 321, (as well as being syndicated in many markets around the country.

Inspiration in Frustration...
It's quite easy to wake up each day and believe what's the use?
I'm no different than my neighbor, I'm no better than my brother.
I toil each day just to pay my bills and find I'm always still wanting.
My joys become stretched farther apart and there seems like no point in being me.
Will I ever make a difference?
Will I ever be of note?
Or, am I destined to just being another wheel in a cosmic wrist-watch, that only draws attention when it is broken?
But a light shone upon me and I considered for a moment, that we are all a special creation.
Concieved in a time before time, in a space unlike space,
to be master of a task designed for us and no other.
There can be no point in denying the fingerprint that I am, though sometimes I like to try,
but the challenge will alway be to identify the assignment,

I'm no different than my neighbor, I'm no better than my brother.
I toil each day just to pay my bills and find I'm always still wanting.
My joys become stretched farther apart and there seems like no point in being me.
Will I ever make a difference?
Will I ever be of note?
Or, am I destined to just being another wheel in a cosmic wrist-watch, that only draws attention when it is broken?
But a light shone upon me and I considered for a moment, that we are all a special creation.
Concieved in a time before time, in a space unlike space,
to be master of a task designed for us and no other.
There can be no point in denying the fingerprint that I am, though sometimes I like to try,
but the challenge will alway be to identify the assignment,
not it's completion.
